In the past 5 years over 27.3 million Americans have fallen victim to “Identity Fraud” scams. Identity thieves use other people’s credentials to get credit cards and loans issued to themselves, and many people do not find out until they try to apply for credit and find out about deliquencies or other malfeasance. Many identity thieves are not stopping at credit, also using the credentials to obtain government documents, on tax returns, and when stopped by police for committing crimes.
