Will you be able to ask the question “can you hear me now?” from your notebook computer? According to this story at CNET, the answer is yes. Notebook manufacturers are making preparations to add Internet Telephony (Voice of Internet Protocol or VoIP) to upcoming versions of their notebooks, with integrated cell phone hardware to be included shortly. The notebooks will allow users to make and receive calls through their computer, on the road or otherwise.
The notebooks will allow for the receipt of voice mail audio files that can be archived on the computer, and other advanced features that are normally associated with high end cell phones. I suspect that this combination of functionality may be a signal that much smaller notebooks capable of real computing, and communications are not far off. We’ll let you know when you can run Word or Word Perfect from you cell phone!
