Podcasting:  The Next Big Thing in Web Publishing.

We all know what the weblog has done for publishing on the web.  Originally viewed as a fad, blogging has become a mainstay in online endeavors and nowhere has that been validated better than by seeing the likes of America Lawyer Media entering the fray.

Now, for those of you who had the vision to see where blogs were going, here’s a new trend (not fad!):  Podcasting!  I have to confess that this concept is so new, and new to me that I don’t even understand it all, but here’s how it works.  Podcasting is a way to take audio you record and distribute it to IPOD devices via RSS feeds.  Now that’s a mouthful of techno mumbo jumbo for most of us, so let’s break it down.

Professional Audio Recording in your Pocket!

As many of you know, I experimented with Internet audio when it was in its infancy and I think it serves me well on the websites I operate.  Back when I first got started the tools for recording were a little more cumbersome and alot more expensive.  As time as past the technology has advanced, and prices have dropped, just as it always does.

Just the other day I came across a new device that should serve virtually every attorney I know well in whatever they do.  It’s called the Edirol R-1.  This device is a self contained MP3 recording device that allows you to record up to 18 hours of studio quality audio on a device that will fit in your shirt pocket.  It’s great for recording conferences, seminars, interviews, and speaking engagements, and then easily converting those recordings into a format that can be streamed from the web using Flash technology.

I can see attorneys using the Edirol R-1 to create marketing and information content to be streamed from their websites, training content for associates and staff, and even information products that can be resold to various markets.

The Edirol R-1 is as simple to use and runs on both AC and battery power.  Recordings are preserved on standard Flash cards, which can save up to 18 hours of recording on one disc.  Obviously, multiple discs will increase your recording time.  The Edirol R-1 will set you back about $550, including a lavaliere microphone for more professional recordings, but it’s worth the investment in my mind, especially if you’re serious about marketing, and growing your practice.

If you’ve ever considered using audio to train, market, or create information products in your environment, this device could be your ticket to a high quality, cost effect method for doing it.

Talk about Preventive Maintenance!

Here’s a novel approach to fending off the potential for patent infringement claims.  Buy the patents at a bankruptcy auction before you get sued.  I guess this won’t be a regular strategy since not every company that may have a claim against you is going to file for bankrutpcy, but it was interesting nevertheless.

Only problem is if you don’t win the auction, by expressing concern about getting sued you virtually guarantee that you will.

Law.com Jumps on Blogging Bandwagon.

It was bound to happen sooner or later.  A main stream legal media source has finally recognized the legitmacy of the blog!  And, they’ve picked some fine legal bloggers to showcase in their blog roll too!

So, the big question is will more lawyers avail themselves of a weblog for purpose of communicating their thoughts and ideas, and of course attracting and keeping clients?  I think we will see more of it now that the concept is being embraced by sources relied on routinely by the legal community.  So, get your blog on!

If you’ve been thinking about starting your own blog, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with the best lady in the business when it comes to putting one together for you.  She happens to be the one who created the one of the blogs being featured on the Law.com blog, so you’ll be in good company.

Free Hi Speed WIFI at Marriott’s Residence Inn.

I’m on my way to New Jersey to spend Thanksgiving with my parents and my sister’s family, and I’m a very much looking forward to seeing them all, and having the kids enjoy each other’s company.  But, when we pack it in for the night and retire to our suite at the Residence Inn, it will also be nice to know we’ve got full access to high speed Internet via their free wireless Internet connection.

I don’t know if it’s available at every Residence Inn, but next time you travel be sure to ask!  Happy Thanksgiving everybody!  I’ll see you when I get back.

Should you do Electronic Evidence Inhouse.

The landscape of legal discovery is changing rapidly because of the proliferation of issues and technology capabilities.  In light of these changes many law firms are considering the idea of developing electronic evidence processing capabilities inhouse instead of hiring a specialty firm to handle them.  Read this article for some excellent points to consider in determining if such a move makes sense for your firm.

Mobile Phones with High Speed Internet.

Samsung announced that it will begin marketing mobile phones in the United States with high speed Internet access in mid-2005.  The phones will take advantage of the same technology that allows Verizon to offer high speed wireless Internet to it’s U.S. customers currently.
